Bigelow Operating Theatre, ca. 1867

Three operating theatres at the MGH were named after Dr. Henry Jacob Bigelow in honor of his many contributions to surgical science. This photograph, taken in the first “Henry J. Bigelow Operating Theatre,” depicts one of the daily surgical clinics given for visiting physicians and medical students. Standing directly behind the patient, watching the administration of ether, are Drs. J. Collins Warren and Charles B. Porter, MGH surgeons.
