Building demolition, July 7, 1937

In 1937, a number of hospital buildings were torn down to make way for the George Robert White Memorial Building. This photograph, selected from a series of images documenting the demolition, shows the wrecking of the Henry Jacob Bigelow Operating Theatre, located in the 1901 Surgical Building. After more than a year of demolition, excavation and construction, the White Building was finally dedicated on October 16, 1939 – Ether Day.
