Nursing class in Mass General Ether Dome

Nursing alumnae

Items in this case reflect the rich history of nursing at MGH. The first patient admitted to MGH, a young saddler suffering from syphilis, took up residence in the male ward of the new hospital. According to the minutes of a Board of Trustees meeting a month after his admission, his wife was “engaged by the [hospital] superintendent as a nurse at seven dollars per month.” She is the hospital’s earliest known nurse.
