Portrait of Ida M. Cannon (1877-1960)

Cannon was the foremost pioneer of the field of medical social work. Working at MGH from 1914 to 1945, she cofounded the Department of Social Services and served as its first chief. Cannon had trained as a nurse and later attended the Boston School of Social Work. She helped establish the American Association of Hospital Social Workers, developed a standardized program for training medical social workers, and spoke at hospitals throughout the country.
