Eliot was an early benefactor of MGH. He was a successful dry goods merchant whose family became prominent in Boston. He was the president of the Bank of Massachusetts and his son, Samuel Atkins Eliot, served four terms as the mayor of Boston. This portrait of the senior Eliot was commissioned to honor his bequest to the hospital.
