Surgical and medical tools from the mid-19th century

Since long before MGH had a freestanding museum, the Ether Dome has served as a de facto museum and a destination for medical history enthusiasts. The artifacts in this case represent surgery and medicine around the time of the 1846 ether anesthesia demonstration. Note the ivory and ebony handles on some of the tools, which were in fashion as a status marker until hospitals started adopting sterile practices in the 1880s.
