Jackson was a co-founder of MGH. He worked as a dresser (surgical house officer) in London for a year before opening a private practice in his native Boston. His expertise in vaccination made him appealing to patients. He became a physician at the Boston Dispensary, a hospital for the city’s poor, in 1802. Jackson was the first professor of clinical medicine at Harvard Medical School and the chief physician at MGH.
