When Pedro Brugarolas, PhD, joined the Gordon Center for Medical Imaging in 2017, he noticed something unusual in the fume hood of his new lab: a decades-old can of ether. Whereas ether fell out of use in human surgeries and dentistry in the 1960s, it remained in use for animal research until the 1980s and was likely left behind when a previous lab packed up.
