“Ether Day 1846” character study

When artists Warren and Lucia Prosperi cast contemporary MGH staff to portray historical figures in their piece “Ether Day 1846,” they chose associate chief of psychiatry John Herman, MD, to play Eben Frost. Dentist William T.G. Morton, who arranged to demonstrate ether anesthesia on surgical patient Gilbert Abbott, brought along Frost, a former dental patient, to reassure Abbott that the ether would work.
