Former pediatric ward

This 1920s photo from a pediatric ward may have been from the Bulfinch Building or from the Weld Ward, an inpatient building that was built in 1902 and taken down in 1945. It captures many features of being a child at the hospital in the 1920s: there were many beds to a room, the beds were convertible and could be used more like a crib, and the children often had books, toys, or schoolwork with them. The specialty now called Child Life Services was an emerging idea in this era and offered children a chance to play and get help in not falling behind in school.
