oil painting in thick gold frame

Portrait of Abraham Touro (1774-1882)

Touro was an early New England merchant and lawyer, and a member of one of the first known Jewish families to live in the Boston area. He was an early donor to the fund to construct MGH and gave generously to the hospital in his will. Touro also helped restore the oldest existing synagogue in North America, in Newport, Rhode Island, where his father had been the rabbi; it is now known as Touro Synagogue.
