White marble bas-relief portrait of a woman in profile with her arm resting on a backrest of a chair

Portrait of Anna Lyman Gray (1853-1932)

Gray was a member of the hospital’s Ladies Visiting Committee for 47 years. She campaigned to include foreign-language books in the committee’s program of providing reading materials to patients. John Chipman Gray commissioned this bas-relief portrait of his wife from renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. John and Anna Gray’s children later donated this marble version to the hospital, and a bronze version of the same image to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
